Sleep In Your Gym Clothes

Sleep In Your Gym Clothes

You only have so much decision making ability.

Once it’s used up, it’s used up.

So when it comes to deciding whether or not to get up early and workout, and if your decision making ability has dried up, there’s probably only one thing which is going to win:  your bed.  It is comfy and warm after all!

So what are we supposed to do about it?

Activation Energy

Activation Energy is the energy [physically and/or mentally] required to get up and do something.  This could be something you want to do, you don’t want to do, or which “just seems to happen.”

The Activation Energy, for example, in making a healthy breakfast vs just having coffee is quite different.

Matter of fact, this is why it’s so hard to start a new habit:  you’ve probably made it so easy and convenient to continue your old habit vs starting your new [desired] habit.

Do I Actually Need to Sleep In My Gym Clothes…?

The answer to this question is “it depends.”

If removing yourself from a warm bed and getting dressed requires vastly more Activation Energy than staying in bed, then you probably need to do something like this:

  • Maybe have your alarm across the room so you NEED to get out of bed to shut it off?
  • Maybe have your workout clothes, shoes, and keys right next to your alarm so you’re right there to start it once your alarm is off?
  • Maybe tell the people you’re working out with your workout schedule for the week.  Giving them excuses on why you skipped out on your goals is going to be harder than getting up and going, I would think
    • Or maybe promise you’ll buy them coffee or food if you don’t make it

This is where you can get creative and creativity is actually fun this way!  This type of creativity leads to the habits you actually want which will benefit you long term.

So…

What do you do to get right out of bed to workout in the morning?
