How Strength Training Improves Your Life Outside the Gym
You started strength training because you wanted to lose weight. Or maybe you started it because you wanted to lower your body fat and you hear that adding muscle increases your metabolism.
There’s nothing wrong with either of those things.
But what surprises a lot of people is that the biggest benefits of strength training usually have nothing to do with your scale.
The real transformation happens outside the gym.
For busy people, strength training because less about the aesthetics and more about improving everyday life.
More Energy for Real Life
You are probably feeling exhausted all the time.
Not because you’re lazy.
Because is life is so demanding.
Work, kids, schedules, stress, poor sleep – it all adds up.
Ironically, many people think exercise will drain the little energy they have left.
But consistent strength training usually does the opposite.
You’ll improve your sleep quality.
You’ll regulate your stress.
You’ll build endurance for everyday tasks.
You’ll feel more physically capable.
It’s not a surprising thing for us to hear, “I have more energy now than I did 10 years ago.”
Not because life got easier, but because they got stronger.
Strength Training Builds Confidence
Something a little overlooked, because it’s not tangible like dropping weight or body fat, is confidence.
Not just confidence in the gym but confidence in the other aspects of your life.
When you get strong, when you build muscle, you carry yourself differently. You stop second-guessing yourself physically and realize you are more capable.
Compare this to the first time you walk into a gym…
…you feel intimidated, embarrassed, and out of shape.
Then something changes. You complete workouts you never thought you could. You lift weights you never imagined touching. And you realize you’re capable of more than you thought.
That mindset change matters well beyond anything fitness-related.
Everyday Tasks Feel Easier
Looking to carry all the groceries in your house in one trip?
Get strong.
Worried about picking up your kids as they get bigger?
Get strong.
Moving furniture?
Being strong helps.
These things sound small but my favorite thing to hear from our clients is that they didn’t notice they got strong until they noticed. In other words, it wasn’t until you went and did the thing that you noticed you were stronger!
One important longevity note? When you age, the thing that’s going to make you stay mobile and self-sufficient? Continuing to lift weights through full ranges of motion (this is key).
This is more than a 6-pack.
Stress Relief
You are undoubtedly carrying around a lot of stress – you’ve got your career, your family, and you are worried about pretty much every other thing.
Scrolling social media or watching Netflix helps give you a temporary distraction from stress, it’s not solving any problems.
Movement is going to give you a solution:
- A mental reset
- Structure
- Routine
- A healthy outlet
- Time away from screens and responsibilities
For many people, myself included, the gym becomes the hour of the day that is theirs.
This is hugely powerful and something I encourage you to take advantage of.
It’s Not About Becoming Obsessed with Fitness
A big misconception about CrossFit or strength training is that you need to make it a hardcore thing that you never miss to gain benefit from it.
That’s not the case.
Three to four workouts per week done consistently (this is key) can completely change how you feel physically and mentally.
This is the goal, after all, right?
Not having fitness take over your life but benefit from it?
I want you to be able to do what you want to do without worrying about fitness limiting everything.
Why Coaching Matters
Beginners need coaching.
Intermediate lifters need coaching.
Yes, even if you’re advanced in CrossFit or strength training, you need coaching.
If you are a beginner, though, intimidation is a very real feeling and a hard thing to get over.
Don’t forget, though: you’re not too out of shape, you’re not being judged, and you will learn what to do because that’s what we’re here for.
Good coaches are going to help you build confidence early. They’re going to teach you to move well, scale workouts appropriately, and will create an environment where you feel supported instead of overwhelmed.
My Favorite Parts of Strength Training
Yes, the physical stuff is great.
For me, though, it’s the life transformation:
- Feeling more confident
- More capable
- More energized
- More resilient
- Better able to handle stress
- And more present with your family
