How to Stay Consistent (After Motivation Fades)
It’s April.
The New Year motivation?
That’s probably gone. Maybe even long gone.
Your schedule got busy, life picked up, and the routine that “felt easy” in January now feels a bit more challenging.
So, instead of talking about how to start, let’s talk about how to keep it going. The people who get results aren’t the ones who only start strong.
They’re the ones who stay consistent no matter what.
Here are the five (5) things our more successful clients do differently.
1 – They Focus on the Process
Goal are great!
There is no doubt in my mind that you need to have them:
- Lose 20lbs
- Get your first strict pullup
- Run a 5k
But, and this is a big but, goals don’t carry you in the day to day. The process does.
OUTCOME VS PROCESS GOALS
Outcome goals are what everybody thinks of when they think of goals. It’s the result you’re looking for.
Process goals are what you probably didn’t even consider. Or maybe you did but you didn’t know to put a label on it. They’re the steps you’re taking to get to your desired result.
Examples?
- Eat veggies at each meal
- Sleep 7-8 hours 5 nights of the week
- Workout 12 times in a month
Our most successful clients understand this and, as a byproduct, they chase the habits on their way to the goal.
Here’s the best part – those habits stack up!
2 – They Fail Forward
By April, this has likely happened to you.
You missed workouts.
You feel off for a week (or maybe 2)
You got out of the rhythm you had at the beginning of 2026
Good. This is part of the process (see what I did there?).
The difference from the person who stops and our best clients? Our best clients:
- Expect setbacks
- Learn from those setbacks
- Get right back into it the next day
Failure isn’t the issue. It’s not even a failure issue – it’s a quitting issue.
Stop stopping. And do it for yourself.
3 – They Learn on Discipline
Motivation is great to have [in January]. By April, it’s an unreliable means of keeping yourself on the beaten path.
Maybe kids activities are ramping up, or work is getting to that busy time or year, or it’s overcast and nice to stay in bed one day.
Our most successful clients don’t wait til they feel ready, they simply just go. Why? Because that’s just what they do.
They’re not perfect (neither am I). They’re consistent.
Discipline fills the gap when you’re having a hard time.
4 – They Ask For Help
A lot of people stall out right here.
I’ll say it again for the people in the back -> a lot of people don’t ask for help!
You don’t have to figure things out for yourself to keep progressing. This is why personal trainers and coaches exist. We’ve been there, we’ve messed it up, and we’ve figured out how to do it better [so you don’t have to].
They people who keep progressing are the ones who are asking questions.
Our most successful clients understand that getting help is like putting your foot on the gas pedal. Ultimately you still may be moving forward, but by asking questions, you’ve made sure of it.
You’re putting in the effort already – make sure you’re pointed in the right direction.
5 – They Get Involved
You’re underestimating this.
Fitness isn’t just a physical thing.
To get the most out of it [and to tip the scales even more in your direction], it’s a social thing.
Our most successful clients:
- Talk to people in class
- Build relationships with others
- Show up for their workout buddies
Things are going to get difficult. They’ll feel impossible, sometimes. And leveraging the social component ensures you’re not just relying on your own willpower.
By building relationships, what you’re actually doing is building an accountability system and a community of like-minded people.
We succeed together and struggle alone, after all.
…I’m sure I’ve heard that somewhere and I’ve got it all wrong.
So, Where Are You Right Now?
You’re not January you.
Which you are you?
- Are you still focused on your process?
- Are you letting small failures turn into big breaks?
- Are you waiting for motivation to hit you in the face?
- Are you trying to do it all by yourself?
This is where a lot of people will fall off. And it’s also the point where the people who succeed… separate themselves.
Your Next Step?
Keep it simple.
Recommit to your process
