“I’m 30 and I’ve Never Worked Out”

“I’m 30 and I’ve Never Worked Out.  Is it too late?”

This might fall in line with the adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

And while I do believe it’s challenging to change habits, I don’t for one second believe it’s too late to start exercising.

And as an aside, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

In any case, there are very few circumstances where someone cannot, or should not, pick up a weight or go for a walk or jog.  Everyone can benefit from movement and from any age.

Rather Than Take My Word For It…

The human body works to maintain a homeostatic environment and its’ job is to continue to function in the most efficient way it can.  It also doesn’t like pain and will do what it can to avoid it.  What this means is if we place a stressor on it, it (our bodies) will be inclined to adapt to this stressor.

A great example of this is making my biceps bigger:

If I do some bicep curls a few times per week, my body see’s this as something it needs to adapt to in case more bicep curls show up at some point in the future.  With this in mind, the muscles in your arms repair and repair stronger/bigger.

The result is if you place the same level of stress on them (weight, reps, sets), you’ll better be able to handle it.

This is True at Any Age

Your body does not stop working to maintain homeostasis at any age and so if I want to start working out at the age of 30, I’ll reap the benefits.  Hell, if I want to start working out at the age of 75, I will reap the benefits.

The types of things I’ll be doing might vary but I will see the benefits, nonetheless.

The moral of the story is to not worry about whether you’re going to get anything out of it, because you will.

The goal is to just start.
