What to Do About Chronic Disease

What to Do About Chronic Disease

I believe it is pretty common knowledge that a lot of the major things that ail us are due to things in our control:

  • Diabetes
  • Some forms of cancer
  • Heart disease not related to genetics (less is related to genetics than you’d probably think)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Arthritis
  • And the list goes on…

Admittedly, I am not a doctor and this should NOT be construed for medical advice.

What I am suggesting is there are commonalities in these chronic diseases:

  • Too much sugar
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Lacking daily activity
  • Poor sleeping habits
  • Poor stress management techniques
  • Hanging out with the wrong crowd (don’t laugh, you are who you hang out with)
  • And this list goes on, also…

Here is what I offer to you:

Too Much Sugar?

It’s probably widely known just how bad sugar is for you.

Cut it out entirely?  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Cut it down and replace it with nuts, seed, fruit, veggies, protein?  You bet!

Not Drinking Enough Water?

Drink water with your meals instead of alcohol or soda.

Carry a water bottle around with you and refill it when you’ve drank it all.

Set a reminder in your phone to check your water for the day.  Missed the mark, drink some more.

Lacking Daily Activity

Notice I didn’t say get up and workout.  I simply said get up and do something active everyday.

If it takes thinking, if it takes being active, if it takes being outside, even better!

Poor Sleeping Habits

I’m going to steal one from a guy I used to work with who’s smarter than me:

“Don’t eat like a child and don’t sleep like a teenager.”

Get to bed when it gets dark and not 3, 4, or 7 hours later.

Weird shifts?  Do what you can.

Poor Stress Management Techniques

Is it impossible to deal with stress and not go drink?  I think not.

Not counting the previous years and years worth of people we’ve worked with, we have had 6 people find different ways to handle stress that do not include alcohol.  It’s possible.

Find a distraction; find a support person; reward yourself with a nap; etc.

Hanging Out With The Wrong Crowd

I said don’t laugh because this one is very real:

If you are working on any of the above things but the people you spend a majority of your time with don’t care (or worse yet, they are guilty of all of them), you are much more doomed to fail.

The peer pressure, the guilty, the questions, and so on.

It’s difficult to find a new crowd but it’s not impossible.

Find people who support you, who support your goals, who will go to bat for you, who you will help you make the decisions you actually WANT to make.

Look at people you look up to, who are where you want to be, and start spending time with them.

What are you waiting for?

Get up and start.
