LT. Michael P. Murphy
United States Navy (SEAL)
May 7, 1976 – June 28, 2005

The short story: LT. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) was the officer-in-charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wings, tasked with finding a key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. His group came under fire and were unable to call out from the location due to the terrain. Although suffering grave gunshot wounds himself, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire by going to a more open area to make the call for assistance. At one point during the call he was shot in the back, but picked the transmitter back up to finish relaying the necessary information. He was able to get back to his team where he continued to fight. LT. Michael Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 27, 2007.
